Amy-Rose’s Reading Diary Part 4

Amy-Rose’s Reading Diary at 2 ½

I can’t believe Amy-Rose is two and a half now. The time continues to fly.

She still loves books much to my delight. Her favourites at the moment remain ‘Ten Minutes Till Bedtime’, ‘Where’s Spot?’ and ‘The Baby Catalogue’ and these are the ones she keeps going back to, they are like old friends at this stage. She loves lifting the flaps in the Spot books and discovering the surprise animals underneath. Spot really is a classic and is a must for any young child’s library. But she also has some new favourites.

Amy’s New Favourite Reads

(with a new star system - ***** A Must, **** Great, *** Good)

Yummy Yucky by Leslie Patricelli *****

This is a fantastic board book all about ‘yummy’ and ‘yucky’ food. The bright, child friendly illustrations are very clever and eye catching; and the text is funny, sharp, simple and even after many, many re-readings, never boring. Highly recommended.

Big Little is another great board book by Patricelli.

Hug by Jez Alborough ****

Amy loves this picture book about a baby monkey looking for his mother as she can ‘read’ it herself. Not really surprising as the text comprises of one word - ‘Hug’. The illustrations are detailed and ‘kind’ (can illustrations be ‘kind’, I think they can). The other animals help ‘Bobo’, the little chimp find his mother. It’s sweet, touching and you couldn’t not like it!

Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell ****

Another strong favourite, if Mummy has rustle up the energy at night to read the whole thing! It’s a little more wordy than ‘Hug’ - not hard! Great illustrations full of life and movement, a suburb text for reading out loud with lots of repetition. In fact all around goodie. Especially good for children who like animals.

I’m continuing with the nursery rhymes, and am hoping to move onto books with a little bit more story soon - for my own sake as well as Amy’s. It’s so important to find books that both me and Amy can enjoy together. Young children in general are very intuitive and they can sense when their parent is not enjoying a book. So search out ones that make you laugh or that touch you as well as your child!

Other recommended titles for this age group -

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Brown Bear also by Eric Carle

Owl Babies by Martin Waddell (with fantastic, dramatic illustrations)

I Like it When by Mary Murphy - Mary is Irish and this book is pitched just right for little ones

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice - not to everyone’s taste, but I love it and Amy finds the ‘monsters’ funny.

Some children are ready for slightly longer stories at this stage - the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes are particularly good or the Lola and Charlie books by Lauren Child. Don’t worry too much about ‘reading up’ an age group - if they don’t understand the text, they can always look at the pictures and make sense of the story that way.

I’ll post my Best Children’s Books of 2005 on the site at the end of the year so look out for that!

Bye for now and happy reading,
