Amy-Rose’s Reading Diary Part 2

Childrens Book Reviews Articles Section Amy-Rose's Reading Diary The Best Children's Books Author Interviews

Age 1+

Amy-Rose is now 14 months and getting bigger and bolder by the day. She’s now almost walking - her current record is 3 steps - and she’s showing lots of interest in how things work. Opening drawers and cupboards is her current speciality and we have installed baby proof catches to thwart her attempts, which isn’t proving very popular with her as you can imagine.

Book wise, she still loves nursery rhymes and action rhymes, especially ‘Round and Round the Garden’ and ‘This Little Piggy’. We have several tapes and CD of favourite rhymes, which she likes listening to and dancing along with. She still loves ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, and I am starting to move her onto ‘real books’ with paper pages, rather than board books. Yes, they receive the odd maul and tear, but she’ll soon grow out of that and there’s always sellotape! She likes books where she can spot familiar things - like cats, favourite toys, and baby equipment, and is able to point her finger at things she recognises. Her attention span isn’t bad for a tiny tot!

I am currently reviewing 42 baby books and picture books for a publication called ‘BookFest 2004/2005’, which is the annual round up of the best books published in the UK and Ireland, and Amy is helping me. When I have finished all the reviews I’ll post them on this site.

I had the good fortune to meet Lauren Child two weeks ago and I listened to her talk about her picture books at a summer school in Dublin, which proved fascinating. I adore her work and look forward to sharing her books with Amy, especially my own favourites, the Lola and Charlie stories, and of course, Clarice Bean.

Happy reading with your own little beans!

Current favourites from Amy’s bedroom library shelves -

1) When We Were Very Young by A A Milne

A classic poetry book for young children. Quaint, nostalgic and sweet. By the author of the Winnie the Pooh stories. Any loves being jigged on my knee to the different rhythms in the rhymes.

2) Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag

A classic black and white picture book first published in 1928 about a little old man and a little old woman and their cats. Another good one for jigging on the knee!

3) Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss

A good Seuss for starting off with. This book uses only 50 words and is a triumph of zany fun. Don’t let your youngster leave childhood without it! Amy loves it.

‘Farmer Duck’ by Martin Waddell 4) Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell

Great man, great picture book. This book has won oodles of awards for very good reason - it’s the charming and funny story of a lazy farmer and a clever duck. Lots of animal noises and repetition for young children.

5) Miffy at the Seaside by Dick Bruna

Bruna’s beautifully designed books have been around for years, for good reason. Children love their bright primary colours and strong, graphic illustrations. Miffy is such a little cutie and Amy loves her.
